Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They are wingless, flat, and reddish-brown in color. They feed on blood and become swollen after eating. Large groups of bed bugs also give off a somewhat sweet odor.
Despite their name, bed bugs can hide in other places besides your bed. Because of their small size, they can infest mattresses, furniture, carpets, closets, clothing, and even squeeze into the cracks in your floors or behind wallpaper. The eggs of a bed bug resemble white grains approximately 1mm in length. Female bed bugs can lay up to five eggs per day, sometimes in clusters, often in cracks and crevices. After two weeks, bed bug eggs hatch and the nymphs begin to feed. Bed bug nymphs are yellow-white when young, and begin to turn reddish-brown as they age. Bed bugs reach maturity within five weeks.
Bed bugs live for approximately 4-6 months at room temperature, but this can be extended if it lives in cool conditions. Bed bugs feed about every 5-10 days, but can go for a few months or up to a year without feeding.

Bed bugs are attracted to our body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale when we breathe. Bed bugs are nocturnal, and feed at night when we’re asleep and unaware. They feed on sleeping humans by piercing the skin with their beaks, and can feed for several minutes at a time. Along with their saliva, bed bugs inject an anti-coagulant into our skin that can cause a reaction and affect the severity of a bite.
Bed bug bites don’t necessarily appear right away. They are often clustered together and look red, small, and swollen. Everyone responds to bed bug bites differently, but if you see small reddish-brown spots on furniture or sheets or see tiny holes in your wall, you may have a bed bug infestation.
Bed bugs do not necessarily transmit disease directly, but the red and itchy welts they leave on our heads, necks, and limbs can be painful. As with all itchy bug bites, bed bug bites can become infected through scratching.
Bed bugs can multiply and travel through your home quickly. They’re more difficult to get rid of than other household pests, so DIY bed bug removal isn’t advised.
